Lucky is the person that lives 15 minutes from a Zoo.   And that would be me.  15 minutes from my front door is the Minnesota Zoo.  A day at the zoo is a little education and a lot of fun, while several mini trips to the zoo is a real education in animal behaviors.  It is an opportunity to observe animals’ behavior without the over-exaggeration of modern media.

The Minnesota Zoo is located 15 miles south of the Twin Cities — or 15 minutes from my house — and it was founded in 1978.  It has 4200 animals representing 542 species.   It was one of the first zoos to arrange the animals by habitat rather than according to species.  The five themed areas which include walking trails ranging from one to two miles are:  the Tropics Trail, Northern Trail, Medtronic Minnesota Trail, 3M Penquins of the African Coast and Wells Fargo Family Farm.   Other places include Discovery Bay with the Sea Dragons an Sharks outside is the Snow Monkey’s play area.  The  amazing  Russia’s Grizzly Coast was just recently opened.

The Minnesota Zoo consistently ranks in the Top Ten Zoos in America.  It is open year ’round and it is as beautiful in the winter as it is during the summer.

If you happen to be a grandparent the Minnesota Zoo has a great deal you.  For $130 annually Grandma, Grandpa and ALL grandchildren can go to the zoo an unlimited number of times for no extra charge.  There are also other zoo benefits included.  For the low price of $155 annually the Grandparents Plus program an adult guest plus all your grandchildren attend at no extra charge.  As you can see in the ticket prices below it really pays to buy those annual memberships.
