La Jolla has a number of beaches and each one is unique and very special in its own way. Windansea located at the end of Nautilus Street in La Jolla and it is the first beach you will encounter when A South to North. It is also known as Wipeout Beach. That name no doubt came from the wave action which is pretty spectacular due to the underwater reefs and jutting rocks. When I worked in La Jolla that was my favorite place to eat lunch. The waves are totally mesmerizing and the beach itself is amazing.
Windansea does not have your traditional sandy beach and due to the terrain and the sometimes violent surf you need to use some caution. As you walk further north on the beach it does become sandier.
Note: Windansea is not wheelchair accessible nor are there restroom facilities. Also unless you are a very experienced surfer those are not waters you want to go into.
Despite the few drawbacks, Windansea is notably the most beautiful beach in Southern California.
If I lived in this house overlooking the south end of this beach I would have to spend all day on the porch!
